The Differences Between Web Programming and Web Design

Web programming is the activity involved in creating a Web site for either the Internet or an internally hosted intranet. Generally, web programming is a general term that refers to a group of related skills that are used to create, develop, and use the Internet and intranet for communication and other purposes. Web development usually refers to the process of writing a program that runs on a browser, although it may also refer to the development of the site in HTML or JavaScript code. Web development can range from creating a simple single web page of just plain text to very complex Web-based computer programs, e-commerce systems, and social networking sites. Although web development has similarities to traditional web development in regard to its goal of developing a “static” web site, web development involves much more than just writing text, images, or code to build a web site. Instead, web development involves the full development of websites through the use of multimedia, animation, database integration, interactivity, video, audio, and other tools.

Web development usually consists of a set of activities such as creating a budget, hiring a web developer, obtaining web licenses, building web pages and supporting them with content, and testing the web application and scripts to ensure that they work as expected. Web development also involves coding, including both machine-level programming and client-side coding, which is typically done inside a browser using a scripting language such as JavaScript. The purpose of coding is to enable the web application to function correctly and perform any tasks that are needed to perform the functions that were defined in the web application. In addition, web developers use various technologies, such as XML, HTTP, SMTP, and SOAP, to assist with communicating with web servers, databases, and other components of the web application.

As web development and web design are closely related, the term web design is also used to refer to both of these processes. A web designer is responsible for completing the visual aspects of the web design as well as coding, while web development handles all aspects of the coding and implementing it into the final web site. Web designers can be specialized in one or more areas of web development, or they may work on a variety of different tasks. Web design is one of the most competitive fields at present, so those who choose this career field must be highly skilled and versatile in order to succeed.
